We have several sizes of spades to take in these considerations. The largest tree 6.5” – 7” caliper depending on species, these can be up to 30’ tall. Keep in mind site conditions are important for good selection. We advise you to have one of our Arborist to assist for “right tree right place”

This is the diameter of the trunk of the tree at base typically 6” above the soil.

Within the first 2 years newly planted trees are in their most critical time for success. Watering timely and with the proper amount is most important.

Listed below is a suggested schedule assuming no rain. Keep in mind our driest periods are normally May-September. The dormant season (late fall to late winter) trees are not dependent on large volumes of water.

• May or temperatures 70-79 degrees - water every 6th day
• June or temperatures 80-85 degrees - water every 5th day
• July and August or temperatures 86-96 degrees - water every 4th day
• September or temperatures 80-85 degrees - water every 5th day

Note: It is not good to water every day. With our heavy clay soils pore space is limited. To mulch water for long periods of time will reduce oxygen availability. Trees need well drained soils (not surface drainage but soil structure drainage). It is suggested to water long soakings (saturation), less frequent to allow a balance of oxygen and water. DO NOT water every day.

To be confidant when an adequate amount of water has been applied you must be able to probe into the soil near 18” deep. A recommended tool is a pointed rod such as a Ross Root Feeder.

Mulching your trees in extremely important. Only use 1-2 inches of mulch. The diameter of your blanket of mulch should be equal to the dripline. This will allow temperature and moisture control. Suggest a high quality hardwood mulch. Keep in mind most mulch should be gently cultivated once a month in the growing season. This prevents compaction.

Tip: Pine Straw (needles) is a good mulch that will not have to cultivated (loosened)

Note: Only mulch up to the trunk of the tree. Leave trunk flare exposed. Do not let your mulch touch the trunk of your tree.

For all trees use 3 table spoons of General Purpose Miracle Gro in 2 gallons of water, mix and pour around the base of each tree. 2 applications in the spring 3 weeks apart and 2 applications in the fall 3 weeks apart.

For Shade and Ornamental trees, use 3 tablespoons of Miracle-Gro in a gallon of water, mix and pour around base of each tree every three weeks. For all Evergreen trees, use Miracid in place of Miracle-Gro with same directions. Use Miracle-Gro or Miracid for one year after planting.

It is also important use hardwood mulch or pine straw. Note: Pine straw can be found in most garden stores or landscape suppliers. Mulch benefits the moisture control, temperature control and biological activity such as earth worms etc.

We use a special product that allows us to successfully move trees all year long. When the leaves are on, we use the product mixed with water allowing us to slow drip the mixture around the tree ’s root system. This process changes changes its normal transpiration (plumbing system) rate of flow to allow safe moving.
